In 1983, an IBM Personal Computer could set you back about $5,000; but that’s just the price of the computer itself. What is the cost of the build, of the labor, of the legal battles and all of the dead ends encountered along the way?

At Cardiff Electric, Joe can readily admit: the cost was people. It cost people — employees, friendships, relationships, even marriages — to build The Giant. And in the penultimate episode of Halt and Catch Fire’s first season, “Up Helly Aa,” we begin to ask: was it worth it?
The Cardiff quartet — Joe, Gordon, Donna and Cameron — arrive at COMDEX, a computer trade show in Las Vegas, ready to aggressively sell Cardiff’s portable PC, The Giant. But the team quickly hits a major speed bump when they learn that Cardiff’s rooms at the COMDEX hotel were nixed since the Cardiff corporate account has been frozen in the wake of the FBI investigation against Bosworth. They need suites, they need a booth, and they need them all fast if they want a chance at impressing COMDEX attendees with The Giant.
Undeterred by their financial situation, Joe and Gordon manage to convince a pair of borderline-amateur techies to throw in the towel on their COMDEX trip following a lackluster sales pitch for their product, the terribly-titled “Occasion Master.” Now armed with a convention booth, suites and an impressive shrimp display, Cardiff is ready to roll at COMDEX.
Only problem? The Giant is not.
Tech glitches always arrive at the most inopportune time in “Halt and Catch Fire,” and COMDEX is no exception. The Giant doesn’t fire up in Vegas, leaving Gordon and Donna scrambling to troubleshoot the PC while the party in the Cardiff suites begins to rage. COMDEX attendees, drunk and ready to be belligerent, however, are far less interested in computer demos at this hour than they are in debauchery — a weakness Joe quickly spots. He distracts from The Giant’s, well, inoperability by flooding the Cardiff party with booze and porn stars from a triple-X convention going on next door in Vegas. No Giant? No problem.
Gordon and Donna manage to get The Giant up and running after the party has died down, and their teamwork paired with memories of COMDEX past rekindles the spark in their marriage. They’re young again and working together in a way that speaks to their original connection. The next morning, still naked and wrapped in blankets, Donna asks Gordon why he never offered to bring her on board at Cardiff, citing her “dead end” job at T.I.
Gordon states that he didn’t know if Donna would be willing to take on the risk of building the Cardiff PC — “You realize what the word ‘jump’ really means,” Gordon says of the monumental task that he has finally finished. Donna replies, “We’re married, Gordon. We already jumped.”
Cameron spent the rest of her party night wandering Vegas with the Xerox boys from California, one of whom has taken a liking to her. She returns to Joe’s side, offering him a rock — a piece of the Hoover Dam — saying that she likes the dam, since it “just does what it’s made to do” without any wires or glossy add-ons. Joe sees the light in Cameron, and suggests she go to Palo Alto where her talent can shine among the young tech savants. Cameron responds, “Maybe we should” go to Palo Alto, not quick to part ways with Joe.

COMDEX revs up, with some “funny in hindsight” quotes — Joe notes how impressed he is with HP’s touchscreen product, but Gordon offhandedly shoots the technology down, saying “it’s a fad.” (Several generations of iPhones later, we laugh at Gordon’s lack of foresight.)
While wandering COMDEX, however, the Cardiff team stumbles upon their worst nightmare — especially for Donna. Hunt is stationed at a booth hocking a portable PC that looks exactly like The Giant, and is in fact a copycat version of Cardiff’s computer — dubbed “The Slingshot,” it’s a direct ripoff of the machine Gordon, Cameron and Joe have slaved away to build.
Hunt’s closeness with Donna and swift resignation from TI become clear — he had been using Donna to dig up information on Cardiff’s PC project. The Slingshot is not just like The Giant, however — it’s actually cheaper and faster, since it doesn’t have the unique, personable OS that The Giant flaunts. In Joe’s words, the Cardiff PC is “dead.”
Joe meets with Hunt, coming face to face with a man even more conniving and manipulative than himself. Hunt has also done his research on Joe, mentioning that Joe left IBM after an argument with his father that led to him rupturing a water main and flooding an entire IBM data center. When Joe threatens legal action against The Slingshot and its creators, Hunt snaps back, “By the time you get in front of a jury, we’ll be on our third generation [of The Slingshot]...We got there first. Deal with it.”
Meanwhile, Gordon calls Donna out on the fledgling bond that his wife shared with Hunt. “He used you,” Gordon shouts at his wife. “You’re blind. You never saw what he was doing.” Donna isn’t ready to back down, however, still aching in her marriage. “I was tired and miserable and you didn’t give a shit,” she says, before laying in the final dagger: “It wasn’t an affair, but it should have been.”

Gordon pounds beers and takes matters into his own hands with The Giant. He strips it of the special operating system Cameron slaved away on, making The Giant faster and capable of competing with The Slingshot. “We had a problem; now we have a product,” Gordon explains. Cameron is devastated to see what has happened to her work of art, and begs Joe to put her OS back in the computer. Joe, however, refuses, even though that pains him — “it’s what’s right for the machine,” he says.
Joe and Gordon move forward with presenting The Giant to COMDEX attendees at their booth, Joe slipping into sharky salesman mode, aggressively selling this new version of the Cardiff PC to badge-wearing techies. One attendee asks where the unique OS that they’d heard about is with The Giant — where is the thing that makes this computer so special?
Joe immediately launches into a pitch that undercuts everything The Giant once stood for: he tells the audience that a word that is “infinitely more important than ‘unique’” is “speed.” The Giant, in its now soulless form, will get work done faster than ever. It is not your pet, your friend, your confidant — it is a machine built to work for you and obey commands. The gutsy pitch receives applause from the attendees, but Joe, Gordon and Donna know they’ve sold themselves out to sell a PC. Cameron isn’t even in attendance.
Joe, Gordon and Donna pop a bottle of champagne that evening, but no one is in the mood to celebrate. Joe leaves to fetch ice for the warm champagne, only to stumble upon a suite packed with COMDEX attendees. Inside, like a sort of religious ceremony, candles are lit around a personal computer — a Macintosh. One man inserts a floppy disk into the Mac and the computer lights up — it introduces itself, a computer speaking to user, saying “Hello.”
Joe is stunned, almost moved to tears. The Giant, The Slingshot, they will be nothing compared to this computer he is laying eyes on, a computer with a soul so intrinsic that, as Joe says to a Xerox guy standing next to him, “it speaks.”
